Private Island Development - Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Economic Sustainability

Corporate Social Responsibility has become a very nice way of demanding more from the producers for those that do not, cannot or will not produce in the name of some distorted sense of social justice. How many individuals leave their car out on the street for others to use when they are not using it? How many people even open their homes to the homeless or other indigent? The reality of human nature is that these acts are not viable options, nor are they capable of providing any real solution other than the creation of a dependency class that will never develop any need (or subsequently, any desire) to provide for themselves.

Economic Sustainability is a multi-faceted approach developing an economically symbiotic relationship between the community economic and financial systems and the individuals within the community development. In such an economic environment, the individuals within the community would provide the necessary force to drive the corporate entities to success through the dedication of manpower and by becoming at least part of the consumer base of the corporate entities1.

concentriclevelsWhile both the Integrated and the Adaptive nature of the community developments are unique and separate, both are dependent upon the other to the extent that they merit being included here together. The Integrated approach is necessary most notably within the sociological approach and solutions. Social sustainability is a relatively new concept it would seem, even if the idea is as old as society itself. Society is all about integration and the collective, collaborative efforts for mutual support and benefit. As for the adaptive approach, again, this is necessary if the community developments are to be beneficial to the individual in addition to the community as a whole. There are going to be cultural differences even among different tribal units within the same tribe, different sectors within any given community and other factors that must be individually tailored just from a sociological standpoint. Additional variations will occur with different environments, locations and other conditions far too numerous to be listed here. This Systemic approach means that the root causes of poverty can all be directly addressed and viable, fluid solutions can be implemented that allow for the long-term and ultimately, the complete eradication of poverty.

The term “Sustainability” has been tossed about for many years but defining exactly what it is, despite the apparent obviousness of the term, seems to be a bit more challenging. Sustainability needs to be considered in at least three primary categories though there are many additional aspects, subsets and other concerns that must also be addressed, analyzed and prepared for. Projects should be economically and financially1 sustainable, environmentally (and ecologically) sustainable and socially sustainable with a goal of complete Systemic Sustainability, if they are to be capable of providing long-term solutions to the problems facing the world today. The problems facing the human race are systemic in nature and ever-changing. Thus, not only do the solutions need to be systemic in response, but also adaptive so as to be able to provide long-term solutions with a minimal detrimental impact.

1 Economics is a social science that studies the production, consumption and distribution of goods and services, with an aim of explaining how economies work and how their agents interact. Finance focuses on the study of prices, interest rates, money flows and the financial markets. Thinking more broadly, finance seems to be most concerned with notions like the time value of money, rates of return, cost of capital, optimal financial structures and the quantification of risk.

Private Island Development Defining Community Developments

Community Developments1 have been around since ancient humans discovered the means to farm and began gathering together for safety in numbers and at the same time, providing each for the other in regards to their harvests. Over the course of time, these community developments have evolved into modern day urban centers, suburban residential areas and more rural farming and industrial communities. Unfortunately, the fact that nearly one-half of the population of the world continues to live in abject poverty is a strong indication that this current system does not work.

Private Island Development and Systemic Governance and Accountability

The role of any government should be the support and protection of all citizens equally. Justice must indeed be kept blind if it is to be truly effective in the support and defense of the citizenry. The powers of government must be few and well-defined and in addition to stating what those powers should be, every effort must be made in the establishment of any system of government, to clearly define and state what limitations must be put in place regarding governance and ultimately, a means, mandatory if necessary, to have the people themselves determine what the continued role of governance should be.

Private Island Development - Why Ambil and Verde Islands
Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive
Pin It

Both Ambil and Verde Islands are considered to be ideal locations for the development of a Special Environmental Zone and the implementation of many related projects and programs within that Zone. In short, these two locations were selected because both Islands are currently for sale. Ownership of the entire parcel of land will be substantially more beneficial and allow for a greater means of cooperation by and between The Foundation and The Indigenous (and/or Aboriginal) people already living on the islands and the development of Specialized Community Developments based on local Cultural and Environmental needs.

An adaptive approach is necessary given all of the differences between cultures, locations and other issues unique to each and every community development. Even seemingly minor issues can often cause grave concerns and endanger the success of an entire community development. Virtually every aspect of the community development(s) will be implemented based on the local circumstances and under such terms and conditions as are negotiated on a case-by-case basis1. While the variables that will have to be customized are too numerous to be listed herein, the list set forth here below should provide the reader with an idea of just what is required to establish the foundations for a successful, inclusively beneficial community development for all of the parties involved. The first step in every community development to be established will be understanding the local environment and any and all such people as may already be living in the location.

A complete systemic1 approach is necessary in order to facilitate viable solutions for local conditions. There will be different cultures among the different tribes and cultural differences from nation to nation and even among groups within all those nations. Environmental concerns are going to be substantially different in many places. In other places, variations as simple as altitude will create entirely different and unique ecosystems within the same community developments and each and every one of those will need to be factored in for the preservation efforts to be truly effective.

Integrated Solutions are necessary at every level of project implementation for the community developments to be successful. While the concept may be difficult to comprehend at first, integration is actually a very important part of isolation or segregation. The Perma-Culture community designs for example, allow for the segregation of residential, commercial and environmental areas by integrating them all into a systemic developmental solution. In regards to the physical infrastructure and actual development of the community, this integrated approach to isolating unique systems is pertinent and necessary for their individual success. Perhaps one of the best examples of this would be to look at the natural environment. Overall, there are environments … on Ambil and Verde Islands, these are tropical island environments. Dotted throughout the landscape however, are many individual, unique and segregated ecosystems which blend seamlessly into one another to create the total or complete environment. While each one may be individual and unique, they are integrated together to form a sustainable whole.

VerdeIslandCoastThis report will serve to establish the basic principles of Specialized Community Developments in addition to a more specific introduction to the initial efforts as will be introduced for the Verde Island Passage and more specifically, for the properties known as Verde Island and Ambil Island. The exact specifications for the plans are left blank in some places and incomplete in others. It should be noted that the reason for this is the prevalance of Indigenous and Aboriginal peoples within many of the locations wherein these special zones will be located, including the Ambil Island and Verde Island Projects. The Chase D. Sheddan Foundation is working hand-in-hand with local and national level tribes and tribal leaders to establish adaptive, unique protocols and systems within each community development inside of each zone. Additional efforts will be conducted in cooperation with local and domestic, national governments and similarly minded international organizations. In cases where the majority of the inhabitants are indigenous and/or aboriginal, more of the effort will be focused on working with the tribal leaders and the local populations. In cases of more historical (rather than cultural) importance and in certain environmental locations, efforts will be made to work with the more corporate system of governance in cooperation with other organizations which share the same ideology for cultural integrity, history, preservation and even reclamation to the extent that it is possible and beneficial.
